Task 1: Integrated Waste Management System for Hospitals
Develop and demonstrate a method for tracking, management, reuse, reclamation, and minimization of hospital generated wastes. Additionally, the teams must address designing and implementation of a cost saving management system for all sizes of hospitals
Task 2: Environmental Remediation Identification System
Develop and demonstrate a method to identify and evaluate the cost/benefit for selected environmental remediation technologies. Additionally, the teams must collate evaluation criteria, develop screening methods, and demonstrate the selected technology.
Task 3: Detection of Fecal Contamination in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables
Develop and demonstrate a novel process that can rapidly determine whether fresh produce has been subjected to fecal contamination. Teams should design and test their method for effectively and rapidly detecting biological or chemical indicators.
Task 4: Detection of Subsurface Metallic Objects (Cancelled)
Develop and demonstrate a new method or make substantial improvement on an existing method in order to identify buried metallic objects. The selected method should be able to identify the object(s) within one foot vertically and horizontally.
Task 5: Non-mechanical Cutting in a Hot Cell (Cancelled)
Develop and demonstrate an innovative method for non-mechanical cutting of various sizes and shapes of different metals that are highly radioactive. The developed device must be remotely located in a hot cell with a minimum of 5′ thick concrete walls.
Task 6: Tank Waste Removal System
Develop and demonstrate a method for the safe retrieval of waste from underground tanks. The wastes include damp salt cake and wet soft sludge. The retrieved material must be mixed with water and transported through existing pipes in preparation for eventual immobilization.
Task 7: Engineered Structures from Small Diameter Ponderosa Pine
Design and demonstrate a roof system to cover a 1000 square foot living space using small diameter round timber structural elements.
Task 8: Mining Pit Wall Stabilization
Develop and demonstrate a cost effective method to minimize or eliminate acid mine drainage. The teams must address issues related to weathering and high wall (exposed pit walls) sulfide mineralization.
Task 9: Sustainable Community Design
Develop and demonstrate a Agreen@ community development plan. Teams must re-plan an existing growing community while considering efficient energy use; old and new housing; and public utilities.
Task 10: Mobile Treatment System for Hazardous Waste
Task 11: Calcium Fluoride Cake Reclamation/Reduction in the Semiconductor Industry
